Films, documentaries, concerts, dance, music and lectures

Eight centuries ago, Gengis Khan established the Mongul empire. Mongolia, whose territory has shrunk over time, is one of the most beautiful countries of the world. The desert camels, the wild horses of the steppes, the echoes of morin huur and diaphonic song will - fascinate the traveller on his way to a Buddhist monastery or a yurt ; and sometimes the passer-by will come across some amazing wrestlers. Through films, lectures, shows and documentaries, we shall encounter the last reindeer men of the Taïga, shamans, the renascent Lamaism, and also ordinary people… It was “The story of the weeping camel” that recently introduced Mongolian cinema to the general public. From “Norjmaa’s Way” (1938) to “The Yellow Dog of Mongolia” (2006), Mongolian producers, trained at the famous Russian state cinema school V.G.I.K., tell us the human story of this country. And don’t forget the surprise : “Joan of Arc of Mongolia” the last film starring Delphine Seyrig !

And more music and dance with...

Om Shivayana Namah (Bharata natyam dance, southern Inda) on the 5th, 6th and 7th April, Ensemble Sakura (Japanese music and dance) on the 25th and 26th April, Kushal Das (Surbahar, northern India) on the 11th of May, Sandip Chatterjee (Santur, northern India) on the 12th of May, Sharafat Ali Khan (Indo –Pakistani song) on the 25th of May.

This sumptuous display of the Kabul Museum’s collections, fully re-constructed here after 20 years of conflict, brings to light four major discoveries. Fulol (2500-2000 BC) ; Ai Khanoum, (3rd Cent. BC) ; Tillia-Tepe, (1st Cent. BC). The display of ancient Indian ivories, Chinese lacquered bowls, glassware, bronzes and even of plaster emblemata all demonstrate the luxuriousness of courtly life during the Kushan Empire (1st – 3rd Cents.). This exhibition highlights the beauty and originality of a heritage that lies between the Indian and Scythian worlds, China and the Mediterranean…

Also : « The Golden Age of Classical India, the Gupta Emire » (4th April – 25th June), at the National Galleries of the Grand Palace : organised by the Reunion of National Museums with the Guimet Museum and the New Delhi National Museum . The Gupta era (4th – 6th Cents. AD) represents the zenith of Indian civilisation. During this golden age, when religious thought, the sciences, literature and theatre all flourished, art reached unprecedented heights of skill and virtuosity.

Swiss artist Comenius Roethlisberger is frequently said to be provocative through his pieces, doing some extreme choices. His "Dearest constellation, sweetest invitation" installation plays with famous logos of big luxury brands written with a mix of sugar powder and cocaine, all presented in clear polyester resine boxes. Insolence, fantasy, cynicism, his work incriminates imaging, and fashion or advertising shots, letting no one unconcerned.

Born 1970 in Sofia, Bulgaria, Plamen Dejanoff lives and works in Vienna, Austria. Contemporary art is a horizontal chaos in which culture and entertainment, artwork and industrial product, art and design mix. Plamen Dejanoff has emerged from this plethora of information as an outstanding representative of the younger generation of concept artists, seeking a new connection between signs and symbols. Plamen Dejanoff strategically combines game plans of art and business in order to fathom the boundaries of the realm of art and thus has in the past developed a series of long-term projects collaborating with companies, designers and architects. One of these Gesamtkunstwerke runs under the title of Planets of Comparison and involves the restructuring of seven houses in his Bulgarian hometown Veliko Tarnovo.

It is in this context that his interest in bronze was born. For Art & Entrepreneurship Plamen Dejanoff has produced a 1.7-meter-tall Pinocchio sculpture made entirely of the aforementioned bronze. Pinocchio, this well-known character from the homonymous children’s novel, stands for the great lessons in life one must learn on the road to maturity and thus alludes to the entrepreneurial values specified by Credit Suisse. In addition to this unique work Plamen Dejanoff has donated two glass sculptures to the Credit Suisse show, representing simplistic versions of a clown and a dog. Their toy-like form again reminds the viewer of figures taken from a fairy tale, a narrative form often chosen to educate about the true values of life. An overview of Plamen Dejanoff’s oeuvre was exhibited at the MUMOK Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien in 2006. He has had solo shows at Palais de Tokyo in Paris, Schloss Wendlinghausen in Dörentrup, and the Museo d’Arte Contemporanea di Villa Croce in Genova. In 2008 Plamen Dejanoff will tour together with Arte Povera icon Michelangelo Pistoletto through a number of European art institutions.

Like a restless ghost, James Dean (1921-1955) continues to haunt us. Though he died nearly 50 years ago, the enigmatic star of East of Eden, Rebel without a Cause, and Giant still symbolizes the mystery and torment of adolescence-an image that his sudden, violent death fixed forever in the public mind.

Magnum photographer Dennis Stock met Dean in Hollywood in 1954 and began to capture him on camera. Shot over a three-month period just as the young actor's star began to rise, these iconic photographs are the greatest pictures ever taken of Dean. Together with Stock's text and an introduction by Dean biographer Joe Hyams, the images provide an extraordinarily intimate view of the cult legend whose brooding good looks captivated fans by illuminating the troubled depths of his character. Published on the 50th anniversary of his death, this is the definitive photographic portrait of James Dean in both his professional and his private worlds-the real man behind the lingering legend.

Upon hearing its name, Eol Trio, one would at first expect a simple classic jazz trio. This is far from being the case. The sound of jazz is pleasantly mixed with rock, to produce a sound similar to that of groups such as Pink Floyd or Led Zepplin, and at times even a funky sound similar to the Beastie Boys. Each piece uses, in its own fashion, different types of music, enabling each one to be unique and different from the next, producing at the end a truly unique style. A quick bravo to the drummer who is able to keep the crowd wanting more. Not to miss!

Corbijn is now a film-maker, but he's still a photograph. "Control: The Ian Curtis Film biopic" is Anton Corbijn's most recent project and, in some way, the culmination of the multi-talented artist's work: Corbijn has directed a film about Ian Curtis (1956-1980), lead singer of the legendary post-punk rock band Joy Division, and is now publishing a book about the making of the film.

The book is a visual diary, with hand-written notations, drawings, and a wealth of photographs. It details the creative process from pre-production through filming to post-production and first screenings. As usual with Corbijn, an amazing work.
